Amplifying the panoramic views in Arlingham with a custom oak framed extension
The brief
We were tasked by contractor, DPT Ltd, to design, build and install an oak framed extension at this new farmhouse in the Gloucestershire village of Arlingham.
The client wanted a feature bedroom that cantilevered out at the rear of the property, creating a bold architectural statement. We were commissioned to design and construct a bespoke oak frame with integrated glazing that would be the main striking focal point within the extension.
The solution
Given our extensive experience in designing and constructing bespoke oak framed extensions and timber frame buildings, taking the time to fully understand our client’s requirements was essential. The extension not only needed to reflect the prestigious beauty that goes hand-in-hand with oak frame craftsmanship, but seamlessly blend in with and enhance the rest of the property.
From a practical perspective, the new timber frame structure needed to span 5m wide x 3m deep, so that it was large enough to fit over an existing masonry floor. It also needed to be a light, bright and airy space that made the most of the surrounding breath-taking panoramic views across the River Severn and as far as the Bristol Channel.
We worked closely with the client and architect, Peter Waller, to deliver and build a tailored solution that perfectly blended the warmth and character of natural timber with timeless oak frame craftsmanship to create a space that looks and feels elegant and welcoming.
The result
The end result, which was designed, built and installed within just four weeks, was an expert blend of contemporary and classic oak frame craftsmanship. (To learn more about our process, visit: https://oakframecarpentry.co.uk/about/the-process/)
The two-storey gable structure features traditional king post trusses with raised collars. The oak frame provides the structural support required for the cantilevered design while introducing warmth, texture and character to the space.
Beneath the feature bedroom, we created a fully glazed family space designed to draw the garden into the home. The extensive glazing maximises natural light and strengthens the visual connection to the surrounding landscape, resulting in a bright and welcoming living environment.
“We designed and built a modern interpretation of a traditional frame with hooded hips that sheltered the large glazed oak screens around the spacious stairwell and picture windows,” explains our Manager, Lee Smyth.
“Incorporating plenty of curved bracing, shaped jowl-posts and heavy chamfered beams, the result is a building with a spacious and light interior, that sits comfortably within its stunning rural setting.”
